Ozzy Osborne, the lead singer of Black Sabbath, passed away earlier this month. His final show, Back to the Beginning, was at Aston Park just a few weeks prior, which was an outstanding event consisting of performances from a number of huge names in rock and metal. Today we saw the start of his funeral ceremony, which took place in the streets of his home city - with the public.
Birmingham’s mayor took some time to say hello to people in the crowd, shaking their hands and speaking with them about Ozzy, and also looking at the mountain of mementos that have been left for the late singer.
Followed by Birmingham-based brass band Bostin Brass, black cars drove down the streets of Birmingham today, one carrying the casket of metal legend Ozzy Osborne. Sharon, Kelly, and Jack all made a stop at the memorial bench, which has been covered in flowers, balloons, and notes from fans who have recently visited the iconic bench. Other appearances included Slipknot's Sid Wilson, Kelly’s now fiancé, who was holding son Sidney. The family laid single flowers down, wrapped in black paper.
The crowd chanted “Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy! Oi, oi, oi!”, which caught the family’s attention. Sharon turned to face the crowd, and passionately threw up devil horns to the many voices, in a moment of complete togetherness and mourning that was shared with everyone. Within the sorrow was celebration.
The moment was available to watch via livestream, and over 21.8k people tuned in to watch the drive-by online, before the family continued to their own private ceremony.
Bostin Brass received their own applause, as they initiated this part of Ozzy’s funeral. They were dressed up in black trousers and white jackets, with Ozzy's name on the back of them. The band played two of Ozzy's biggest songs as they walked the streets of Birmingham; "Iron Man" and "Crazy Train". The crowd loved it.
Rest in Peace, Prince of Darkness. Our thoughts are with your family today, and all those who have been touched by your music throughout your life time, and who will continue to be.
